Naruto The Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (Daikatsugeki! Yukihime Ninpōchō dattebayo!!. Great Action Scene! Snow Princess' Book of Ninja Arts) is a 2004 film directed by Tensai Okamura and written by Katsuyuki Sumisawa based on the popular anime and manga series Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto. It was released in Japan on August 21, 2004. The popularity of the series has spawned several sequels, beginning with Naruto the Movie 2. The movie was released on DVD on April 28, 2005. The film takes place right after episode 101 "Gotta See! Gotta Know! Kakashi-Sensei's True Face!", though events in the film leave its exact place in the series continuity questionable. The ending song is called Home Sweet Home and is sung by Yuki. The English version replaced this song with "Never Give Up" by Jeremy Sweet due to licensing restrictions.
As a bonus, the short and non-canonical OVA Konoha Annual Sports Festival (Konoha Undōkai) was included with the Japanese release of the film. The ten minute opening short revolves around Naruto's inability to use the bathroom while participating in a sports tournament. It is notable because virtually every character, living or dead, in the Naruto universe makes an appearance in it (most of them standing in a restroom-queue). The dead fourth Hokage also makes an appearance in the shot.
In America, the film was released as a one-day showing on June 6, 2007. Instead of the OVA included with the Japanese release, the American release included a short featurette entitled "World of Naruto", as well as a behind the scenes featurette afterwards with interviews with the main English cast and select members of the main Japanese cast. The OVA will, however, appear in the U.S. DVD release. The DVD release is set for September 4, 2007. The movie premiered on Cartoon Network on September 8, 2007. The film also played at Cineplex Odeon and Empire Theatres cinemas in Canada, distributed via Bell TV to play the film at all cinemas at the same time. The film aired at the Great British Museum in London, U.K. on July 28, 2007 for a single showing. The film was also slated for one-day showings in Australia on October 14.
On November 13, 2007, a 3-Disc Deluxe Edition of Naruto the Movie was released in the United States. It has many extras and features that the standard U.S. DVD , released a few months earlier, did not include. It includes the ten-minute short "Konoha Annual Sports Festival" that was originally shown with the Japanese release of the film, the complete soundtrack to the movie, documentaries of the American voice recording of the movie, movie art postcards, and more.
In Brazil and South America, the movie will be distributed by Warner Bros. and will be released at the theater in October 2009, and in December 2009, will be released on the Warner Channel's Warner Movies. Both releases will be in English dubbing, but the Warner Movies version will be uncut.
Plot
The film opens with Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno and Sasuke Uchiha watching a film, starring Yukie Fujikaze, in the local cineplex. Kakashi Hatake has sent them to watch it as preparation for their next mission, guarding the actress who plays Princess Fuun. The actress, as the story progresses, is revealed to be a real princess from the Land of Snow. Doto Kazahana, the princesses uncle, had ousted Yukie's father in a coup d'etat. Naruto's and his teams mission is to prevent Kazahana from kidnapping the princess whilst she is fulfilling her next role.
Several times Kazahana's henchmen, wearing Chakra armour, attempt to steal the princess. Naruto's team, however, manage to delay the princess from being captured. The antagonist eventually kidnaps the princess amid the defeat of the princesses secret body guards, who reveal themselves in a bid to protect and restore her rightful place as the ruler of the Land of Snow.
Naruto manages to climb aboard the ship carrying the princess in an effort to rescue the actress. He is captured and a mechanism is attached to his body, causing electricity to surge through his body when he uses his Chakra, thus disabling him. Kazahana forces Yukie to hand over a crystal necklace her father gave her when she was child. He believes it to be a key that can unlock the hidden treasure Yukie's father had left behind. Both Yukie and Naruto are placed into a prison cell.
The rest of Team 7 manage to infiltrate the fortress. They go to confront Kazahana but he manages to escape with the crystal necklace. Naruto and Team 7 fall in pursuit but are confronted by Kazahana's henchmen. Naruto goes on while the rest of his team battle the ninja. A furious battle ensues, Team 7 are able to overcome the opposing ninja. Naruto catches up with Kazahan to see the crystal is a fake. Naruto's battle is a serious challenge to him when he attempts to fight the antagonist. Sasuke later joins the battle but is defeated by the enemy's attacks. Sasuke managed to locate a weak spot by using his Chidori and is unable to fight.
Naruto uses his Rasengan in an angered bid to defeat Kazahana, and wins. Yukie, in the end, decides to reclaim her rightful place of royalty and even mentions personally with Team 7 that even in the life of royalty, her career in acting will not cease.
