Every six months one of the allied countries in the Five Great Shinobi countries will manage the exam; the goal of which is to determine which Genin are worthy of being promoted to the rank of Chuunin.
The first Chuunin Exam the audience views in Naruto is interrupted by the invasion of Konoha. During the time skip in the series, all the Genin except for Sasuke and Naruto advanced in rank by participating in Chuunin Exams. When we are reintroduced to the characters in the second part of the series, we learn that Shikamaru and Temari are both making preparations to hold a new Chuunin Exam.
